Oploo Castle Moat – Sludge removal

In the summer of 2018, the moat around the Oploo castle dried up, causing considerable odour nuisance in the surrounding area. This prompted the municipality of Sint Anthonis to contract Van Boekel to dredge the moat, whilst limiting nuisance to a minimum.

During the preparatory phase, the quality of the sludge was determined, after which an agreement was reached on the removal of the sludge and the additional work required. In consultation with the municipality, the decision was made to remove the sludge in early 2019, as water levels would be low and this would make it possible to re-sow the park in March.

We worked from 10 January to 18 January to prepare the site, remove the sludge and repair the park. Immediately after the work, damaged pavement was repaired and residents’ dirty windows were washed, which was Van Boekel Regionaal’s way of putting the finishing touch to a great result whilst minimising nuisance.
