De Vijfhoek streetscape

Commissioned by the City of Amsterdam, Van Boekel Bouw & Infra is realising the streetscape of the Vijfhoek (Amsterdam South). The Strawinskylaan bicycle parking garage, already built by Van Boekel Bouw & Infra, is located below this streetscape.

Creating a premium look and feel

The design was made in consultation with the City of Amsterdam.

The City wished “To create a safe and green space, where people can meet and there is room to play.” In addition, they wanted the entire ground level to have a premium look and feel, opting for an infinity pool with a string of animals consisting of no fewer than 161 granite elements, which were individually 3D-designed.

We are currently planting 13-metre-high trees, creating a lovely public space that everyone can enjoy.

First milestone reached!

We started work in August 2018, reaching the first milestone on 26 October 2018. The new North-South cycle path, including the adjacent footpath, is the first part of the new public space to have been put into use. With the new paths, cyclists and pedestrians can easily move to and from the new bicycle garage at Strawinskylaan and Amsterdam Zuid train station.

Streetscape in the making

We subsequently started working on the granite elements which would combine to form the string of animals, consisting of a bird, a crocodile, a snake, a mole and an otter. In addition, the streetscape also features an infinity pool, which is bisected by the neck of the bird.

Corten steel edging, made of a type of steel that forms a beautiful layer of rust, was installed around the strips of greenery, and various civil works were carried out. In mid-December, 68 trees were planted. The part was opened to the public in December 2018, after which final work was carried out on the northern strip of the streetscape in 2019. The project was officially delivered at the end of January.
