Strawinskylaan bicycle parking garage

Van Boekel Bouw & Infra was commissioned by the City of Amsterdam to build an underground bicycle parking garage on the north side of Amsterdam Zuid train station, under the so-called Vijfhoek (Pentagon).

We were awarded the project after submitting the Most Economically Advantageous Tender. Joining forces with design agency wUrck, we came up with a beautiful design that did justice to the surrounding area whilst also featuring more than the required 3,500 parking spaces for bikes (> 3,700). We started building the 65 x 65 m construction pit in the spring of 2017.

Spacious, light design

This Design & Construct tender gave tenderers ample opportunity to come up with a beautiful design. The bicycle parking garage under the Vijfhoek has a remarkable, 7-metre-wide aisle, promoting circulation and giving the garage a very spacious feel. The 3.3 m-high ceiling is higher than usual and the parking garage features various striking light art pieces. The bicycle parking garage is also equipped with a parking guidance system, showing cyclists where they can find a free space.

Excavating and building while the shops stay open

The contractor faced the major challenge of ensuring that cyclists, pedestrians and users could pass by the construction site undisturbed during the construction process, causing as little inconvenience as possible. This was explicitly stated in the call for tenders and meant that the underground bicycle parking garage would have to be built in a very short time. The concrete roof was finished after just five months, after which the City could start work on the streetscape. At the same time, Van Boekel Bouw & Infra continued its work underground in order to restrict inconvenience to a minimum. The garage was opened for the cycling public in May 2018.
